Why did everyone hate the DooM Multiplayer Beta?

Why did the beta recieve so much hate?
Why did the beta recieve so much hate?

It has been more than a decade since any studio has released a game in the Doom franchise (this Doom being the first released by Bethesda Studios) and seeing how sci-fi FPS games are now one of the most popular genres played today (especially on the PC), Doom could not have a better time to re-emerge with a new and graphically/systematically upgraded game. However once the game’s multiplayer was released to the public as an open Beta, instead of a pleased and excited community the developers faced a massive mob of angry and bitter players. Some of their hate stretched to the point of absolute despise towards anyone who talked positively about the game or even showed clips of it in the background of a YouTube video and etc. So what went wrong?

To start off, the angry mob comparison may have been slightly exaggerated, however the grand majority of people who played the Doom Multiplayer Beta did not claim to have had a good experience, and certain old fans of the franchise even appeared to be upset by what they witnessed as well as seriously worried about what the complete game design will be once the game is fully released.

One of the most common complaints that are heard about the game is that it is too generic, as a lot of its gameplay functions are borrowed from other games that are popularly played on the PC and consoles today. Features that are found in other modern first person shooters, like levelling, challenges and kill/death ratios have been implemented into the game, which theoretically should not be there as the Doom games have been famously acknowledged as being classed as arena shooters, which in other words are quick “jump in and have fun” shooters. This most likely isn’t a coincidence as the developers for Doom’s multiplayer are the same people who have worked on “Halo 5 Guardians’” multiplayer and have therefore most likely transferred certain aspects from their previous game onto Doom.

There have also been a lot of negative attention towards certain gameplay aspects by the public, notably old Doom players. One of which is the fact that players are not able to take their opponent’s guns and are instead forced to carry the guns that have been set by their load-out. The gauss rifle was the only gun that was available to be picked up from the ground, which is most likely due to the fact that it is considerable more powerful than the rest of the guns that are available for the players. This also brings up the point that certain weapons are a lot more powerful than other, therefore causing Doom’s the general weapons arsenal to be unbalanced, therefore making it very likely that future players will only use a single gun in multiplayer if this is still the case once the full game is out.

Instant melee has also been borrowed from Halo which is unusual as Doom’s previous titles used melee as its own weapon that you had to select from your weapon inventory in order to bash an enemy. This is disappointing as the old mechanic resulted in interesting and no less entertaining ways to kill enemies e.g.: the chainsaw. The chainsaw itself has been seen in the single player demo however there is no evidence that you will be able to use it in multiplayer.

Another similarity with other modern shooters is the fact that weapons have to be unlocked in order to be used. This is obviously a feature that has been taken from Call of Duty and restricts the use of interesting guns for the player. It also gets in the way of enjoying Doom for its large variety of different and entertaining weapons that were easily obtainable within the first few levels of previous Doom titles therefore leaving the player with the rest of the game to enjoy the mass weapon variety that has been given to him. Foe certain people this even acted as the franchise’s unique selling point because there aren’t many other things that are as fun as blowing the head off of a large hell monster with an energy beam laser rifle.

Lastly the game also uses random hack module drops to give a boost to a certain aspect of the player. The drops themselves look like something that is found in Destiny and should therefore not really exist within Doom. There is also a Halo/Call of Duty-ish double jump thrusting mechanic which acts as the icing on the cake for making Doom’s multiplayer eerily similar to every other modern shooter that is currently out there.

Overall the game does not seem to be a bad game by generic standards, however it is a giant disappointment by Doom standards because too many features and aspects appear to be directly borrowed from other mainstream shooters that are the most popular on the market. Perhaps the developers were looking to make the game’s multiplayer more mainstream in an attempt to pique the interests of a casual Call of Duty and Halo player, but the problem is that Doom has always been seen as an arena shooter with its own unique charm, and most of its community will always consist of old as well as new Doom fans. The classic Doom to be precise. Hopefully the developers will address the problems that are listed above, if not then Doom may end up being just another game that is popular for two weeks and then never touched again by most.

  1. It has been more than a decade since Bethesda has released the last game in the Doom franchise. Seriously? Bethesda didn’t own id when Doom 3 came out. At least get the opening line of your article right if you want anybody to take it seriously.

      1. Bethesda didn’t have the rights to DOOM when the third came out shit dick. Do the reading.

      2. Pay attention, he was saying that this is the first Doom game released by Bethesda.

Also, people are seriously disappointed by the multiplayer because it didn’t live up to previous titles? Last I checked, this is the first Doom game to even feature a multiplayer mode.

  2. “This also brings up the point that certain weapons are a lot more powerful than other, therefore causing Doom’s the general weapons arsenal to be unbalanced, therefore making it very likely that future players will only use a single gun in multiplayer if this is still the case once the full game is out.”

    Please, learn how to write.

  3. “Foe certain people this even acted as the franchise’s unique selling point because there aren’t many other things that are as fun as blowing the head off of a large hell monster with an energy beam laser rifle.”

Ah, so close. Do please try again.

  4. How can you release this article when the first line of it is already completely wrong? And then there’s the typos.

Who the hell proof-reads this stuff? Do you guys not have an editor or something?

  5. “The chainsaw itself has been seen in the single player demo however there is no evidence that you will be able to use it in multiplayer.”

Did you watch the multiplayer trailer? Gauss cannon, chainsaw and BFG are all pickups in multiplayer.

    1. if your brain cant fill the gaps then you need to go back to school.

Inb4 – Chill out and try to take a bit more of a relaxed approach on life =)

  6. Do you even spell check bro?

Foe certain people this even acted as the franchise’s unique selling point because there aren’t many other things that are as fun as blowing the head off of a large hell monster with an energy beam laser rifle.

  7. Title: “Why did –EVERYONE– hate…”. Article: Fails to source any “hatred” from fans. Please change the title to “How the new Doom ironically borrows too much from other FPS genres it helped birth”, since that seems to be your main point.

  8. Jumping on the editing bandwagon:

“…in an attempt to peak the interests of a casual Call of Duty and Halo player,”

You’re looking for the word pique.

  9. Stop spamming your shit articles on Reddit with multiple accounts. You can’t write and you literally copy/paste from other articles. Please go kill yourself.

    1. Jesus, easy up already. The guy is providing you with free reading material.
Ok he made some mistakes, but holy shit there are some aggressive people on this forum, what’s wrong with you?

As for the article, I think he’s confusing Doom with Quake…
Can’t wait for this, I still remember seeing the animation of the chaingun in the original doom for the first time and thinking it was so amazing!!! 😀

  10. I would argue that Doom was *never* seen as an arena shooter. I think you are getting that confused with Quake. It was always a great single player experience first (with a scary as hell atmosphere) and a good multiplayer game second. The fact that they lead with the multiplayer piece and that it was so much like Halo/COD has many people scared about the direction of the campaign and the overall simplification of the genre is leaving many a doom purist very concerned.

  11. Well, I thought it was fun. I think people are a little butthurt about it and expecting more than what it is at face value. DOOM multiplayer is not going to ever blow the doors down. It felt like DOOM and Quake had a baby in multiplayer form. Nothing mind-blowing or revolutionary, but it was still fun to play. Certainly not without its flaws, but entertaining nonetheless.

Back in the day, FPS games were just carnage FFA-fests without a lot of structure. I hate the comparisons to CoD, because it seems like every single FPS in the world gets compared to that and discussions always steer towards that, when it shouldn’t freakin’ matter. Can’t make everyone happy. One issue I have with this article is for (more than once) saying something like “that doesn’t belong in DOOM.” I call B.S. on that statement. If you give players ANY shooter game today without the ability to jump, your game will be spit on left and right, whether you call yourself DOOM or Halo or Team Fortress. No one wants to play a modern, current gen shooter without some key functionalities that have evolved in the FPS genre over the years.

It’s a situation of (no pun intended) damned if you do, damned if you don’t when it comes to designing DOOM multiplayer. Change too much and people think you shat on the original game and made it “too much like CoD.” But if you don’t change enough, you get slammed for making a generic, boring game with no advancements from FPSes over the years, and no market appeal. Everyone will just go right back to their Halos and CoDs at that point.

I’m looking forward to DOOM for the campaign, not the multiplayer. I just wanna stomp some demons.

  12. I seriously hope the single player experience is better. i want a DOOM that Horror/FPS game like Dead Space, Aliens, F.E.A.R., or even DOOM 3.

  13. He knows how to write. The voice is strong and the type I would expect from reporting. He just needs a copy editor to give it a read over and remove a couple extra words and typos. I happen to be a freelance copy editor looking for work. Please email me.

  14. Just a heads up, it appears you have a mistake. Certain Affinity is handling the multiplayer in Doom. They did not work on Halo 5 Guardians multiplayer though. They worked on the previous Halo games: Reach, 4, and Master Chief Collection.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Certain_Affinity

Why is Halo 5 in quotes, but no other games are? Also your font style is really small on this site. Probably due to how narrow it is, it’s much harder to read for me than other news sites. Just a heads up.

  15. They have stated and shown trailers with the chainsaw used in multiplayer. It’s a beta, so not every bit of content is available

  16. Mike is very butt-hurt. I noticed he left comments about grammar rather than the content. Clearly, a deep lack of social skills and care for the content of the article was lacking when he made this comment. I’m not here to bash you like you did the writers grammar and sentence structure, but I will point out that you need to stop being a dick in life because your boss is shit to you because you lack the confidence to make risks in the workplace.

Now to the actual content of the article. Indeed, having the identity crisis for dooms multiplayer is very worrisome. I do think even if they did kept the Halo/COD/Destiny style atmosphere of the game it would still be a good selling point for the game, but it would not be a killer game to just the campaign and mess around in snap-map title. They could redeem the title by adding weapon pickups to the current multiplayer ( similar to how Dukenukem Forever tried to redeem it weapon choice decisions ), add a classic arena style multiplayer mode,p add real modding support like the fallout series has, and push back the actual multiplayer release date while keeping with the release date for the core campaign. Snapmap will probably be as gimmicky as it will come, without the addition of real modding tools and an advanced mapping system this title is going to die out as soon as the release the of the last DLC.

  17. “therefore causing Doom’s the general weapons arsenal to be unbalanced,”
UPDATE: We have gone through the article again and corrected all the errors, mistakes on our part.
Even your update isn’t spelled correctly. Whoever you guys pay to proof read your stuff need a pay cut.

  18. Well it says that the writer has only been a gamer for 10 years, so we can assume that they are either of stunted intellectual capacity regarding anything about videogames or are somewhere in the ages of 12-14.

Seriously though please never write anything ever again.

  19. so hold up, players are complaining they added levels, challenges and stats…OH NO THE WORLD HAS ENDED!!!! please get a grip I mean really bit pathetic no? old doom players are complaining cause its not like the old doom. Guess what it never was going to be, if you want to play the old doom. PLAY THE OLD DOOM!! no one is stopping you, this is a new Doom game for a new generation and in that it has to bring to new generation of players in and guess what those players play. That’s right destiny, cod and halo, shocking right… ummm nope. I’m not even sure how hack modules are like destiny but fine. Bottom line, stop complaining because YOU didn’t get the game you expected even though no promises were ever really made and Bethesda don’t owe you shit. Good day.
